Club History

Founded in 1910, Wyong Roos Rugby League Club has been among the Central Coast’s top sporting clubs for more than a century. It is not only one of the oldest existing rugby league clubs on the Central Coast, but also one of the oldest clubs in the game itself.

The great history of the Roos is characterised by a continued focus on sustainable success both on and off the field. Our core philosophy is one of innovation and leadership, which has seen the Club achieve many incredible firsts:

In addition, the Club has achieved the following honours:

1910 - 1919

The Wyong District Rugby League Competition established by F.G (Gersh) Baker and S.A. McKinnon. Wyong joined the Newcastle Rugby League in 1912, competing in Second Grade

1919 - 1947

The Wyong and District Rugby League was formed, including teams from Jilliby, Kincumber, Nords Wharf, and Yarramalong. Wyong won their first officially recorded premiership in 1929, followed by victories in 1930, 1931, 1932, 1934, and 1936

1947 - 1959

The Central Coast Rugby League Association was created, and Wyong, coached by Ted Watts, won the premiership in all three grades in 1947

1980 - 1990

1980-1990: Won premierships in 1982 and 1990

1990 - 2000

The Wyong Roos continued to be a strong presence in the league, securing premierships in 1996 and 1997

2000 - Present

The club has won additional premierships in 2002, 2009, 2014, and 2016. They competed in the New South Wales Cup from 2013 to 2018 and continue to participate in the Central Coast Division Rugby League

In total The Roos have won 20 premierships and has always been an integral part of the Central Coast rugby league community

It’s impossible to refer to the history of our club without paying tribute to the late great Morry Breen. Regarded by many as the father of our Club, Morry was a footballer, coach, worker’s advocate, social activist, and a committed environmentalist. The invaluable role he played in the establishment of the Club makes it fair to say that if it were not for Morry, this Club might not exist. Some years ago, when he was told that the Club’s main playing ground was being named in his honour, he typically resisted, stating “There was no way I was going to let them single just one person out for what we achieved”. Thankfully he eventually was persuaded to accept the much-deserved honour.
